Most popular surname for babies born in Victoria, Australia is Singh – here’s how it changed over time.

Singh has retained its ranking as the most popular surname in the state of Victoria for the sixth year in a row.

Records from Births, Deaths and Marriages Victoria show Singh, a popular surname in South Asian and Southeast Asian communities, especially India, has topped the list of 20 Family Names in Victoria every year since 2019, after first holding the top spot in 2017.

Singh was the most popular family name registered among babies born in Victoria in 2024 with 628 registrations.

Statistics obtained by 9honey show this was followed by Nguyen, a common Vietnamese surname, in second spot with 502.

Kaur, common among Indian and Pakistani communities, was in third spot, after being registered 452 times.

This was followed by the common Anglo-Saxon name Smith in fourth place with 407 registrations.

Rounding out the top five was another name with Anglo-Saxon origins, Williams, with 249 registrations.

Patel, Sharma, Jones, Brown and Wilson rounded out the top 10.

Further down the list were Ali, Tran, Gill, Lee, Khan, Wang and Taylor.

A look at Top 20 Family Names in Victoria in 2023 showed Singh topped the list with 516 registrations, followed by Nguyen with 368, Kaur with 366 and Smith with 341.

This was followed by Nguyen with 396, Brown and Jones with 247, and Wilson rounding out the top five with 239 registrations.

Williams (226), Tran (210), Taylor (209), Anderson (159), Thomas (153), Johnson (148), Ryan (140), Martin (134) and Lee(133) were the next most popular surnames in 2004.

Singh first became the most popular surname in Victoria in 2017 when it overtook Nguyen, which held the spot in 2015 and 2016.

The baby name trend that’s not just for celebrities anymore

Nguyen narrowly reclaimed the top spot in 2018 before Singh took the top position in 2019, when it was registered 511 times.

It has topped the list of Family Names in Victoria every year since.

Smith last held the number one spot in 2014, when it was registered 487 times, ahead of Nguyen with 452 and Singh with 315.

Smith was the most popular surname in Victoria from 2004 to 2012, when it lost the top spot to Nguyen.

Smith topped the list again in 2013 and 2014, before but was usurped by Nguyen in 2015.

It has not regained the top spot since then.
