A lot goes into making the decision to grow your family, or to welcome another child after your first.
While it is a deeply personal decision, a mum on TikTok has shared an honest admission about why she and her husband are “one and done” – happily and by choice – and it’s made a lot of people really angry.
Gabrielle Swanson, who has a four-year-old son, shared her reasons in a video which has been watched over 600,000 times.

“Listen,” Swanson said quietly from the couch.
She panned around the room; it’s clean, there’s a fire roaring away on the other side of the room and she looks utterly relaxed.
“My husband and my son are playing upstairs. He brought me tea before, and this is something that happens really regularly. I’m so grateful,” she said.
“But whenever anyone asks ‘Do you want more kids? Do you think you’ll ever have more?’ – we have one four-year-old – I’m just like… ‘Why would you start over?’ It’s great! They’re up there having a great time, I’m getting me time, and then we trade!”
Now, obviously this kind of family structure isn’t for everyone, but Swanson wanted to share that you can enjoy just having one kid.

“One & done is such a happy time and not enough people say it,” she captioned the video.
But she’s been met with plenty of criticism and was forced to turn off the comments on the video after copping some rather horrible ones.
Swanson posted a follow up video in response to a comment from a man named Steve.
“He will be zero aunts and uncles, kids will have zero cousins,” read the comment.
She hit back and said, “It’s like I never thought about that, ever before, ever… but again is that a reason to bring a child into the world? So that my son’s possible future children can have aunts and uncles?”

This post was met with a lot more positive comments, with a lot of only children letting her know they’re absolutely happy with their lives.
“I hope you know how much this comment will help me sleep tonight 🥺 the noise to ‘give him a sibling’ cuts DEEP. Thank you,” Swanson replied to one woman.
Other people shared stories of having siblings, who they didn’t talk to or have any relationship with, backing that not having a brother or sister is fine.

“That was the only reason I wanted to have a second then realised that was a bad reason. My adult brothers just give me stress and I never played with them when younger,” commented one woman.
And others shared that while they wanted another baby, due to fertility it just never happened and they’ve had to come to terms with being one and done, and finding ways to see the joy in it.
