Prince Harry’s six word ‘vow’ to Meghan when they started dating

When Prince Harry started dating Meghan Markle back in 2016, he made a vow based on something the then-actress was told as a young babysitter.

During an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show on Thursday to promote her lifestyle series With Love, Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex revealed why the couple agreed to keep “dating” after marriage.

While studying at Northwestern University, Meghan told actress and host Barrymore that she made money by babysitting.

The father of one of the children she watched gave her advice to tuck away for the future and she did, it seems.

“Meghan, when you meet your person one day, I want him to say to you the same thing that I said to my wife when we got married which is: ‘I vow to always date my wife’,” the dad advised.

“And I told H that when we started dating, and he goes, ‘I vow to always date you’.

“So we have this connection, I think, because we’re so committed to treating each other the same way you did before had a ring on it. Before it was locked down. When you’re just courting each other and you can see all the good and joy during that butterfly period.”

This is not the first time Meghan’s opened up about the couple’s early days together.

Four years after their Windsor Castle royal wedding in May 2018, they set the record straight on their love story in the 2022 Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan.

The couple admitted they hadn’t been entirely honest about how and where they’d met, sharing recollections of the moments that led them to messaging on Instagram before going on a date.

While they’d publicly stated their meeting was a blind date set up by a mutual friend, the reality was a little different.

Prince Harry had a secret account on the social media site and spotted Meghan in a fun face-filter video with a mutual friend.

He asked who the actress was and the pair connected before going on their first date at private members club Soho House in London.

Within weeks they holidayed together in Africa, a place that is sacred to Harry, and the whirlwind romance kept going at speed, with the couple announcing their engagement in November 2017.

The actual proposal took place a few months earlier inside Nottingham Cottage, Harry’s then home on the Kensington Palace estate.

Following their nuptials, the newlyweds moved into their new home of Frogmore Cottage, near Windsor Castle, where they welcomed their son Prince Archie in May 2019.

Less than a year later, they’d relocated again – this time to Los Angeles, via a short stint in Canada.

They’d quit their jobs as senior working members of the British royal family in search of financial independence and freedom to work on their own projects.

The Netflix deal they signed – reportedly a five-year deal worth $US100 million ($158 million) – was one of their first big contracts, which came after Prince Harry’s Penguin Random House book deal was signed.

Meghan’s new lifestyle series, which launched this week after being delayed two months out of respect to victims of the LA wildfires, could be the last Netflix project the couple roll out through Archewell Productions.

Their five-year deal ends this year and whether or not it’s renewed with largely depend on the success of the TV series and accompanying product range, which Meghan launched in partnership with the streaming service.

Nine Entertainment Co (the publisher of this website) owns and operates the streaming service Stan.
