Princess Beatrice named patron of premature birth charity, makes first appearance since daughter Athena’s birth

Princess Beatrice has announced her special new role during her first public appearance since the premature arrival of her second child.

The princess and husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi welcomed daughter Athena in January, several weeks earlier than expected.

On Thursday (Friday in Australia), the couple emerged at a gala hosted by the charity Borne at the Victoria and Albert museum in London.

For the occasion, Beatrice wore a chic cream tweed jacket, secured with two bow brooches, and a skirt in the same shade.

The mother of two revealed she is now a patron of Borne, a fitting appointment given her recent childbirth experience.

The charity is dedicated to funding research into the causes of premature birth around the world.

“The work that Borne is undertaking is something that is incredibly close and personal to me following the recent birth of my daughter,” she said, per The Telegraph.

“Every year in the UK, 60,000 babies are delivered too soon, with little information or research as to why this is.”

“That is why I am really looking forward to supporting Borne and its programme of groundbreaking research, which I hope will help thousands of parents and children in the future.”

The news of Athena’s birth was shared by Buckingham Palace on January 29, a week after her arrival.

Athena Elizabeth Rose Mapelli Mozzi was born on January 22 at 12.57pm, weeks earlier than the UK springtime due date they’d mentioned in their pregnancy announcement last year.

Her proud dad also shared the news on his Instagram page, along with a photo he took.

“We welcomed baby Athena into our lives last week,” Mapelli Mozzi said.

“She is tiny and absolutely perfect. We are all (including Wolfie and Sienna) already completely besotted with her.
