Renter finds stray dog in well underneath house in Texas, United States

An American renter has become one stray dog’s saving grace after a chance discovery.

The man, who has opted to remain unidentified, was minding his own business at his rental home in Longview, Texas, when he heard some faint barking from a dog in need.

At first he thought the barking was coming from outside but quickly learned that it was coming from below, through his floorboards.

Animal control officer Bobby Jumper attended the man’s home to investigate where the noise was coming from.

He soon discovered that there was a dog trapped at the bottom of an almost four-metre-deep well underneath the house.

According to the Washington Post, the man didn’t even know there was a well under the house.

Of the discovery, Jumper told the publication he “was very shocked”.

“I’ve been doing this for over seven years and that’s the first time I’ve ran into something like this,” he said.

To rescue the dog, Jumper called in back up from the local fire brigade and their quick-thinking efforts which included making makeshift slings to winch the stray dog to safety saved the poor pup.

“It took multiple people and a lot of different tools and equipment,” Jumper told the Washington Post.

The rescue took three hours and the team almost considered ripping up the home’s floorboards but eventually found a way into the house without any damage.

Despite the ordeal, the stray pup, which was later identified to be a Basset hound mix, appeared completely unscathed albeit incredibly hungry and thirsty.

Rescuers believe the canine had been trapped for days without food or water, according to the Washington Post.

After failing to find the dog’s owner it was determined that he was a stray and was taken to the Longview Animal Care and Adoption Centre.

Rescuers opted to name him Timmy after the character who was known to fall down the well on the TV show Lassie. Timmy has now been taken in by a loving family.

The adoption centre shared the rare experience on Facebook calling it a “rescue story of a lifetime”.

“We witnessed a heartwarming tale of bravery and kindness that we just had to share,” they wrote.

“Thanks to the quick thinking and heroic efforts of our local firefighters and animal control team, the dog was safely brought to the surface, shaken but unharmed!”

“Thank you to everyone who played a part in this miraculous rescue,” the post continued.

“It’s a true reminder of the incredible bond between humans and animals and how a community comes together in times of need!”
