Sibling name theme: Mums and dads are jumping on board this trend for naming siblings

Published on

Sure, naming a baby can be hard, but what about naming their sibling?

For a lot of parents, it’s enough of a challenge to settle on a name they both like for their first bub, so it’s no surprise plenty of mums and dads are sticking to a trend when it comes to sibling names: themes.

For a lot of parents, they’re going with a name they love, so it makes sense to stick to the same theme when naming more babies as they come along.

According to new data from BabyCenter, themed names are one of the big trends parents are going for these days.

It’s simple – if you leaned into a certain style of name for your first child, like biblical names or names inspired by places chances are you’re going to be drawn to similar options in the same theme when it comes to baby two, or three.

It’s something celebrity couples have embraced, including NFL star Patrick Mahomes and wife Brittany with their three kids.

The couple recently announced the birth of their second daughter, sharing her name on Instagram: Golden Raye Mahomes.

She joins two-year-old brother Patrick ‘Bronze’ and sister, three-year-old Sterling Skye.

The one thing linking their names? Metals. You’ve got Golden (gold), Sterling and Bronze.

But they’re not the only family to stick with a theme, with a lot of parents on BabyCentre sharing their themed names.

“I knew a family with gemstone names: Jade, Gemma, Amber, and Crystal,” says BabyCenter member Snickels.

Names for boys and girls inspired by the sun

Other baby name themes which are becoming more popular with parents include names inspired by the seasons, like winter vintage names for boys and girls; and ‘Croc’ names which can also be described as ‘diamond in the rough names’ – all of which can work for siblings.

The ‘My Best Friend’s Dad’s’ style of naming has become a big trend for baby boys, with many names that are more suited to the bowlo on a Friday arvo coming back into fashion.

For girls, names that mean love are another theme which is easy to embrace for sisters, or, of course, well-loved classic names.

One of the hard things to navigate can be finding a name that suits your second if it’s the opposite gender.

An interesting style of naming that works for both boys and girls is names inspired by mythology: think Athena, Iris and Thalia for girls, while Apollo, Odin and Paris work oh-so well as sibling sets for boys.

For a subtle sibling pairing, why not look to the rainbow? Colours are a really lovely way to stick to the same theme for names but don’t feel too obvious, either.

But if first names of the same name feels a bit too on the nose for you, you could also follow a theme with middle names.

“I am thinking of having nature references in my children’s middle names,” says BabyCenter Community member ZoesMamaPlus1.

“Middle names used already include Savannah, Nirvana, and thinking Aurora this time. Other names we like for future children include Skye, River, August, and Silas. And I just found out Silas means forest or woods, so it is just perfect!”

The baby name trend that’s not just for celebrities anymore

If middle names are where you’re stuck, but you want to stick to a theme, why not consider things that you love that you can pass onto kids.

For dads with a love cars, why not go for a name like Holden, Ford or Aston for middle names? Sneaking in a bit of your favourite hobby.
