The surprising store selling a big name laundry detergent at the cheapest price in Australia

Published on

Shopping around for cleaning products we’d normally get at the supermarket has become a popular way to save during the cost of living crisis.

Now you can add another hardware store to the list of shops selling big name cleaners at bargain prices, with Mitre 10 offering a huge saving on an everyday essential.

The retailer’s sale on the 8kg Omo washing powder features in the March catalogue, which runs until March 23.

This particular bulk buy is usually sold at Mitre 10 for $64 but is currently available for $52, making it the cheapest price for this product in Australia right now (prices correct at the time of publishing).

It means the washing powder costs just $6.50 a kilo, which is more than half the price of 1kg Omo detergent powders sold at major supermarkets.

The 6kg version of the same product is also on sale down from its usual price of $49.99 to $42.

Mitre 10 spokesperson Kath Carroll tells 9honey Money that the bulk buy is always popular with customers.

“The demand for our OMO 8kg Washing Powder keeps growing, especially when it features in our Mighty Buys catalogue. Even when it’s not on sale, customers keep coming back for it, along with our other high-quality, great-value cleaning products. It’s a trusted favourite for households, and we’re proud to make essential cleaning products accessible at consistently low prices,” she says.

The laundry powder isn’t the only cleaning product on sale in the Mitre 10 March catalogue with several cult favourite cleaning products on offer.

Scrub Daddy’s original yellow sponge is down from its regular retail price of $7.15 to $4, while the Eraser Daddy two pack is $3.60 cheaper than its usual price at $6 and the Scour Daddy three pack is also $6, a saving of $2.50.

For fans of The Pink Stuff, you’ll find the brand’s scrubber kit on sale for $29.99, down from its regular retail price of $39.95.

Retro items that could be worth a small fortune

Looking outside the store you do your grocery shopping in for savings on cleaning products isn’t the only way to save on these items.

A quick Google search to compare prices and look for the cheapest option also helps, as does waiting for items you don’t urgently need to go on sale.

It’s not all about shopping hacks, though, with simple habit changes around the house another way to cut down on spending.

The laundry is a good place to start, with tweaks to your washing routine having the potential to save up to $1189 a year, according to CHOICE.

Swapping hot water washes to cold, doing larger loads, ditching fabric softener and using dryers less can all help slash your spending and powder bill.

You can also save on laundry detergent by using less per cycle than instructed on the packaging with a tablespoon amount often enough to clean your clothes effectively.
